Bird's Nest Anthurium plowmanii
This Anthurium belongs to the Araceae or Aroid plant family and is native to western and northern Brazil into Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
The most notable feature of Anthurium plowmanii is its large, wavy, strap-like leaves. The leaves are leathery, glossy, and can grow up to several feet long. The undulating edges give the plant a dynamic appearance, often compared to ocean waves. It is a terrestrial or epiphytic plant, meaning it can grow on the ground or on other plants, respectively. It typically forms a rosette of leaves resembling a bird's nest.
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Requires well-draining soil, typically an aroid mix that includes components like orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss.
Like many other Anthurium species, A. plowmanii helps purify the air by removing common toxins such as formaldehyde, ammonia, and xylene, contributing to a healthier indoor environment. Whether grown as a terrestrial plant in a pot or as an epiphyte mounted on a piece of bark or tree fern, it can thrive in various settings, offering flexibility in how you choose to display it.
