Carpoxylon macrospermum Palm Tree

Carpoxylon macrospermum is endemic to the Vanuatu islands of the south Pacific ocean. It was at one time thought to be extinct. It was known only from descriptions of its fruits and seeds until discovered in cultivation on the island of Espiritu Santo by Australian botanist John L. Dowe in 1987. Espiritu Santo is the largest island in the nation of Vanuatu. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Carpoxylon palm is a graceful, tall, emergent, pinnately leafed palm with a well developed, prominent, shiny, green crownshaft and beautifully pronounced bright white ringed leaf scars.

Carpoxylon macrospermum is a very easy and reliable palm for warm temperate to tropical regions. This species may hold promise in some warm temperate areas. It has been exposed to temperatures at or just below freezing for a couple of seasons and shown thus far to resist cold damage.

Edible fruits resemble green coconut in texture and flavour. They're considered somewhat of a delicacy by local villagers and the roots are used in preparations of numerous remedies. Carpoxylon macrospermum is primarily used as an ornamental palm in parks and gardens. A large, beautiful, captivating and powerful centrepiece to any landscape! Definitely an LGF favourite!
