Dypsis cabadae

Habitat and Distribution: Only recently has a native stand of D. cabadae been found in the Comoros, an archipelago island nation lying between northwestern Madagascar and Mozambique. It has however been widely known in cultivation for many decades in Cuba and the United States.

Description: A very stately and majestic medium sized clustering palm. It has very dark green stems punctuated by nearly white ring-like leaf scars giving it a very dramatic and pronounced bamboo'ish look. When mature, the cabadae palm’s ripe fruit is a very deep ornamental red. It grows to 20-30’ on average.

Culture: Adaptable to a wide range of soils, light and fertility. It has a moderate salt tolerance and can be planted in bright sun to light shade. Cabada palm is a drought tolerant and generally trouble free easy palm.

Comments: Cabada palm became a much-desired alternative to D. lutescens when commercial production started in the 1980s. Stanley Kiem, a founding member of the International Palm Society, brought it to Miami following a trip to Cuba in the 1950s. It was unknown in Madagascar or nearby islands, where all other members of the species are endemic. Its origin eluded experts until recent years, when it was discovered in the Comoro Islands northwest of Madagascar. Most likely Dr. Cabada, for whom the palm was named, obtained it for his garden near Cienfuegos from a ship captain whom he had asked to collect palms from his various destinations around the tropics. This chic palm provides a very attractive architectural accent to any landscape. Seldom seen in cultivation. Should be planted much more often. A highly coveted species. Cabadae palm is rivaled in its stately beauty by few others. A top favorite at Let's Grow Florida!
