Pseudophoenix sargentii, Buccaneer palm

Habitat and Distribution: Pseudophoenix sargentii is native to most of the major northern Caribbean Islands, southeast Mexico and south Florida. It is found in coastal habitats on limestone or dune sand over limestone in seasonally dry forest, tropical hammock, and coastal scrub. The Buccaneer palm was first discovered in the USA in 1886 on Elliot Key, an island approximately 10 miles from Miami, FL.

Description: Buccaneer palm is a solitary species growing to 10-25 feet tall. The trunk is 6-12 inches wide with a canopy 8-12 feet wide. The crown holds 8-12 fronds that are 4 to 9 feet long. Leaves are greenish-blue above and silvery below, with erect leaflets distributed in different planes giving it a plumose look. Typically, this palm produces only 1 or 2 new fronds a year. When young, the leaves are disticate (in one plane). The bee-attracting inflorescence is erect and highly branched. It grows from among the leaves rather than beneath the shaft, as with most crown-shafted palms. Fruit and seed production from this palm comes in a very unique tripel (3 seed) arrangement. When the fruit is mature it is bright red, turning a great looking palm into a striking one.

Culture: Pseudophoenix sargentii thrives in moderate to high levels of light and is about as drought, salt and wind tolerant as you can get! Buccaneer palms can be found with their roots In salt water in the Bahamas. This palm is widely adaptable to different soils and a very light feeder but prefers a well draining alkaline base. It does well in any warm temperate or tropical climates. This beautiful palm grows easily, though slowly in cultivation.

Comments: The Buccaneer palm’s historic distribution was widespread over the entire range of the Florida Keys, however most of these palms have been lost in habitt due to wild collecting and development. Some homes in the Keys still have grand old specimens in their yards. Unfortunately, this beautiful, unique and rare Buccaneer palm is now endangered in most of its native habitat and has also become rare and quite valuable in cultivation. Makes an awesome potted specimen due to its slow growth, modest size, drought tolerance, and unique ornamental appeal.
