Barbados Cherry, Malpighia emarginata

Barbados Cherry is originally from Central America, tropical South America, and the Caribbean.

This evergreen shrub, or small tree has a spreading branching habit on a short trunk. It usually grows to about 10 feet tall but sometimes reaches 20 ft in height.

Mature trees can survive brief temperatures to 28º F. It prefers full sun and grows well in a wide variety of soils.

Barbados cherry trees produce generous amounts of bright red cherries at a very early age. Trees from cuttings can bear fruit at heights of less than 1 foot. The cherries are juicy, extremely high in vitamin C and other antioxidant nutrients.

Barbados Cherry is a popular bonsai tree because of its small size, small leaf and branching habit. It is also grown as an ornamental and as a hedge.

This is an easy, handsome plant with deep green foliage, beautiful pink flowers and bright red fruit. The Barbados cherry tree will grow and fruit fairly well with little care.
