White Powder Puff, Flowering Tree, Calliandra haematocephala
The White Powder Puff Calliandra is a South American native, typically from Bolivia’s warm tropical climates.The area where these exotic beauties are found is Known as “the greenhouse of the world,” thus ensuring this globally important eco-region straddles the northern boundary of the Amazon Jungle.
Calliandra haematocephala does best living in tropical climates similar to the climate of South America where the plant is originally from. It grows well in tropical, subtropical, humid and dry climates.
White Powder Puff is a flowering shrub that can grow up to 11 - 15 feet tall, in its natural environment, without boundaries, but if potted it will stay small similar to a bonsai and will not likely grow past 5 feet tall. This large, multiple-trunked, low-branching, evergreen shrub has silky leaflets which are elliptic pinnate ever glossy copper when new, turning to a dark metallic green on clumping stems. The profuse, fragrant bloom is the main reason for its popularity, with big puffs, two to three inches across, produced during warm months.
White Powder Puff performs equally well in full to partial sun and a wide range of temperatures as long as it’s kept above freezing. Calliandra is a genus included in the leguminousCategory of trees which are nitrogen fixing and attracts hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.
In temperate but cooler zones it can be covered and protected from frost. Even if exposed to freezing temperatures the Powder Puff Tree will grow back during the summer months. It has a longer bloom season and more compact growth habit than the red form. The large 3” white puffs arrive continuously during the short days of the year, from early winter well into spring, on the arching branches.It will do well in clay, sand, or loam as long as the soil is well drained and somewhat acidic.
The plant has a high drought tolerance. Once it has started growing the plant is very low maintenance and may require occasional trimming. The plant is usually free from pests and disease resistant,
You can develop a short trunk by staking or heading back lateral branches until a sturdy trunk can support the developing canopy.
