Powder Puff, Dwarf Red, Calliandra haematocephala x surinamensis, Nana Tropical Flowering Tree Plant
The genus Calliandra contains over a hundred species that are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. It belongs to the nitrogen fixing pea family, Fabaceae.
The Dwarf Powder Puff tree is a compact or dwarf variety created with a cross between the red or white C. haematocephala and the larger pink C. surinamensis species.
This dwarf version of the very popular Powder Puff tree is a compact cultivar that reaches 5-10 feet tall with similar spread depending on growing conditions and pruning. Red flowers are borne throughout the canopy in the warm months of the year. This selection stays compact and dense and is in many ways superior to other species in the genus "Calliandra" if a small ornamental shrub is needed.
Dwarf Powder Puff is very adaptable to a wide range of sunlight, soil, moisture conditions and is hearty to zone 9 or above. It makes an outstanding hedge providing more frequent and longer blooming periods while requiring much less pruning than other species in the genus. As a member of the Fabaceae pea family, green, sustainable, horticulturalists will be happy to know that Dwarf Powder Puff is a fantastic soil “Nitrogen Fixing” tree.
It’s also a fantastic container specimen for those who may need to move it to protection from winter weather. This is one of two small ornamental flowering trees we can think of that could pull off a patio or poolside planter situation with ease and minimal maintenance, the other being the slightly smaller Calliandra Schultzei, Dwarf Pink Powder Puff
Its range and uses are endless as a compact, well behaved, easy and slower growing species in the genus. Highly sought after as a bonsai specimen, this easy, carefree Calliandra with stunning everbearing powderpuff blooms is a showstopper!
