Pseudophoenix vinifera

Habitat and Distribution

Pseudophoenix vinifera occurs in dry forest, at 300–400 m elevation, in Haiti and the southwestern Dominican Republic.

A single-stemmed, evergreen palm tree able to grow from 7 - 25 metres tall. The unbranched stem can be 30 - 40cm in diameter; the upper part of the stem is swollen, thickest towards the top and with distinctive rings; it is topped by a crown of long, graceful leaves.

Able to be grown in the tropics and subtropics, this palm can tolerate some frost with occasional temperatures down to around -2°c[423. Prefers a sunny position. Requires a well-drained soil. Established plants are drought tolerant. Very slow-growing.

In the past, this species was much exploited for the sweet sap that was fermented into “wine” (hence the epithet “vinifera”). The palm is still occasionally used for this purpose, but past exploitation has so diminished populations that the practice seems to have diminished as well.

Pseudophoenix vinifera makes a striking ornamental palm!
