Corypha utan Palm Tree
Corypha utan, commonly known as the Gebang palm, is a massive tropical palm tree native to Southeast Asia including countries like Indonesia and Malaysia and typically grows in tropical rainforests.
Corypha utan can reach heights of up to 98 feet and its enormous fan-shaped leaves can reach up to 30 feet in diameter making it one of the largest palm species in the world. The terminal inflorescence, formed after 50 to 80 years of vegetative growth, holds the record of being the world's largest flowering structure and produces millions of flowers and tens of thousands of seeds. Ultimately the life of the tree will end once the fruit has matured.
This magnificent palm will grow successfully in a wide range of environments from warm temperate to hot tropical. It is slow growing, and doesn't like being disturbed once planted.
Corypha utan’s long lifespan, massive size, and extraordinary flowering behavior makes it a truly remarkable and unique species. It’s one of the most breathtaking landscape trees available for large parks and gardens and also makes a stunning focal point to any garden or large greenhouse collection.
