Copernicia hospita Palm Tree

The Copernicia hospita is endemic to the open savannas, woodlands and coastal regions of Cuba. These beautifully fanning palms can be found adjacent to mangrove forests.

This striking and rare palm is a true statement in any landscape. The circular blue gray waxy leaves spread out like fans on long thin stems in a characteristic circular outline. The trunk is a distinctive smooth column that can grow up to 27 ft tall and 1 ft in diameter. This palm produces delicate brown flowers with particularly hairy branches and small marble-like fruits.

This medium-sized palm is slow growing, thriving in full sun and in tropical conditions. It is highly drought tolerant but does well in moist soil with excellent drainage. Ideal for Hardiness USDA Zones 10-11. Mature palms may tolerate brief exposure to freezing temperatures as low as 26 °F.

Commonly known as the Cuban Wax Palm, it is arguably one of the most beautiful of all fan palms, the Copernicia hospita makes a beautiful addition to any landscape. It is renowned for its beauty and distinctive silvery-blue leaves. Historically, the hard and durable stems of this palm were used extensively for fence posts, while its leaves are woven into hats and baskets.
