Dictyosperma album ( ‘Red Leaf Form’ )

Common Names:

Hurricane Palm

Habitat and Distribution:

Coastal forests on the Mascarene Islands of Mauritius, Reunion, Rodrigues, and Round Island.

Description:

Dictyosperma album is a beautiful medium-sized palm, generally reaching about 40’  in height. One of the finest palm tree forms in existence. It’s crown of fronds forms and incredibly lush, full and symmetrical shape that is akin to the coconut palm and in a way even more tropically exaggerated. This variety differs from other subspecies in that it has a noticeable and unmistaken emerging red leaf.

Culture:

A very easy low maintenance palm. It grows fast given a sunny position and adequate water and feed, and will succeed in tropical, subtropical, and some warm temperate areas. The Hurricane Palm can also take considerable coastal exposure.

Comments and Curiosities:

All three varieties of Dictyosperma palms can take considerable coastal exposure i.e. salt and wind, and are referred to as“Hurricane palms”

This is a palm that has few rivals in its ability to majestically occupy a wide open spaces in coastal areas.

Also a beautiful and hearty potted specimen when young.

A rare palm growing in few landscapes and not widely available.

Very drought and wind tolerant.

Large, strong, colorful handsome palm!

Deserves a prime location in any landscape!
