Eugenia uniflora /Pitanga/ Surinam/Brazilian/Cayenne cherry

This fruiting, evergreen shrub that reaches 10 feet in height and withstand lows' into the 20's, makes for a wonderful hedge. The Surinam cherry bears small, round fruits with eight prominent ribs that are best enjoyed fresh and almost black.

The Suriname cherry is a low maintenance plant that easily produces flowers and fruit when planted as a hedge. With little effort and care it can set fruit up to twice a year. Although it's not very demanding, moisture and fertilizer when blossoming and fruiting can greatly increase production.

It will begin to bear fruit at approximately 2-3 years old. The less pruning the better and the fruit should be left to ripen on the plant prior to picking.

It's resistant to pest and disease as well as being drought and heat tolerant. It thrives in humidity and enjoys a full sun position.
