Ginger, Pinstripe / Variegated, Alpinia formosana

Habitat and Distribution:

Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, where it occurs in tropical and subtropical climates. Most Alpinia are plants of forest understory habitat.

Description:
Clumping perennial rhizomes forms an attractive, upright mound of gently arching foliage. Upright stalks of shiny foliage are gently accented with white pin stripes. These herbs lack true stems, but have pseudostems usually up to about 5 - 6 feet long which are composed of the overlapping leaf sheaths. They grow from thick rhizomes. The plants are generally aromatic due to their essential oils.

Culture:

Gingers are heavy feeders and drinkers during the growing season. Grows in full shade to full sun. Growing zone 8-11. Foliage is hardy into the 20's on an established plant, and roots/rhizomes are hardy to around 10 degrees. During winter foliage may go dormant and come back rapidly the following spring. Alpinia formosana 'Pinstripe / Varigated" Ginger is tolerant of a wide range of soil components and growing conditions, although they will be most at home with adequate moisture, good drainage after heavy rains, and rich fertile soils.

Comments:
Species of the genus are known generally as shell ginger.

Alpinia is the largest genus in the Zingiberaceae “ginger” family with about 230 species. A number of those are commonly grown for their flowers, and others are used as spices.

An outstanding foliage plant.

Produces a large inflorescence of stunning white and red flowers.

Makes a great interior plant.

Very hardy.

Edible ginger is only one of approximately 1,300 species of the very diverse Zingiberaceae family.

Gingers are classed as a herbaceous perennial and have enjoyed popularity as an ornamental plant in Asia and the Far East for centuries. Only recently have they become known as outstanding ornamentals in the U.S.
Gingers are finding favor as interior landscape plants and most do very well in containers.

This variety is fast growing as gingers go.

Awesome bloom attracts butterflies  !

Easy care low maintenance addition to just about any landscape.
Great potted plant accent for a porch or patio, and does well indoors.
