Kentiopsis oliviformis Palm Tree
Kentiopsis oliviformis hails from the island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. It’s a large solitary palm with thick erect pinnate fronds and a stunning long deep green crow-shaft (its best feature!) and a beautifully leaf-scared “ringed” trunk, flared at the base.
Kentiopsis oliviformis likes a sub-tropical rather than tropical climate. Cold Hardiness Zone: 9b. Rare in cultivation but very adaptable, even takes the occasional light freeze without damage. A surprisingly fast grower once established.
The name “oliviformis” refers to its olive-shaped fruits. Kentiopsis oliviformis is endangered. All populations are in areas with agricultural pressure. Clearing forests and harvesting trees for the edible palm heart have greatly reduced populations. A favorite for many palm collectors and certainly one here at LGF!
