‘Misty’, Southern Highbush Blueberry, Vaccinium

History / Habitat and Distribution: ‘Misty’ blueberry is a Southern Highbush hybrid variety released in 1990 by the University of Florida, Gainesville. Blueberries are native to eastern North America and are one of the few crop plants that originated here. They are classified as wild ‘Lowbush' or cultivated 'Highbush'. The Southern Highbush blueberry is a cross between Northern Highbush blueberries and various native southern species, giving it a greater range of adaptation than either of its parents. The Southern Highbush tolerates a wider range of soil conditions and temperature variations.

Description: Misty blueberry cultivar is a highly ornamental bushy deciduous shrub that vigorously grows upright to about six feet high. It will begin blooming in early May with small pink flowers. Misty also has attractive blue-green foliage that remains evergreen in mild winters or turns brilliant red before falling in cold climates. It’s a year-round beauty!

Cultivation: Misty is a fast growing, early season, self pollinating Highbush blueberry with a high yield and a long season. Masses of small pink flower clusters appear in late spring and give way to sky-blue, medium- large, very sweet fruit in summer. The chilling requirement is about 150 hours. Highbush blueberries typically prefer medium to wet soils and are not drought tolerant. Blueberries grow best in acidic soil and are subject to  few pests and diseases. Highbush blueberries are adapted to fine, medium, or coarse soils that have a pH range of 4.7 – 7.5. They should be planted in full sun, though part shade is acceptable.

Fruit: ‘MIsty’ fruits are medium to large, light blue in skin color, with good firmness and a sweet flavor. Researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Center have found that blueberries rank number one for fruits with cancer fighting antioxidant properties. They are also known to slow age-related loss of mental capacity, fight cardiovascular disease, stroke, urinary tract infections, and even improve eyesight.

Comments: A good variety for warmer southern regions. Grown in the landscape or a container with ease. Misty is often used as a companion to  pollinate with ‘Sunshine Blue’ or ‘Sharpblue’ for higher yields. Blueberries are highly touted for many health benefits. Misty is one of the most attractive, vigorous, high yielding and flavorful of the Southern Highbush varieties.
