Ylang-Ylang, Cananga odorataor 'Perfume Tree'
Cananga odorata is native to much of tropical Asia, from India to Papua New Guinea, and Queensland, Australia. It is a fast-growing evergreen tree of the custard apple family Annonaceae. The clusters of black fruit are an important food item for birds. Perfume Tree can grow up to 16 ft a year and averages ultimately about 40 ft or more in an ideal climate. Once established this tree will produce fragrant blooms almost year round. Regular pruning promotes flowers. The essential oil from Ylang-Ylang is used in aromatherapy. It is believed to relieve high blood pressure, normalize sebum secretion for skin problems, and is considered to be an aphrodisiac. The oil from ylang-ylang is widely used in perfumery for oriental- or floral-themed perfumes (such as Chanel No. 5).
Perfume Tree makes an outstanding landscape specimen or unique and fragrant large indoor potted plant. It's an easy tree to care for, with no particular requirements regarding soil, water or food. It is also highly resistant to pests and diseases. Ylang-Ylang is evergreen, fast growing and hardy to zone 10 and the warmer areas of zone 9.
